Department of Pediatric Cardiology

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology is equipped with the latest diagnostical and cardiac monitoring tools. Beside routine ECG examinations we perform 24-hour ECGs, 24-hour bloodpressure measurements, pediatric exercise ECG with spirometry and echocardiography. All these examinations are also offered in the outpatient clinic.

For cardiac catheterization there is a cardiac catheter laboratory available. In about 50% of cardiac catheter investigations interventions like septal defect closures are performed.

Another focus of the department lies on prenatal diagnostics and treatment of fetuses with congenital heart disease, arrhythmias or heart failure. Fetal echocardiographic examinations are performed from the 16th to 40th week of gestation These examinations are performed in cooperation with the department for prenatal medicine.

For the stationary treatment a specialised ward with mother/father-child units and intermediate care beds is provided. Our patients are treated by specially trained pediatric cardiologists and nurses.  

Division of Pediatric Heart Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Heart Surgery has 20 years of experience. Beside several other surgical techniques, which have been performed for the first time in Linz, the first patient suffering from hypoplastic left heart syndrom underwent successful Norwood I palliation in 1997. Since 1995 more than 3000 children underwent cardiac surgery. More than 25% were newborns and 2/3 of patients were younger than one year of age. In 2013 more than 400 children were operated by Associate Professor Mair and his team.
